The White House confirmed the initiation of government employee terminations on Friday, following through on prior threats linked to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to stretch into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Early Information

Russell Vought posted on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the government’s process for terminating staff.

While the official provided no details on which departments were affected, a treasury spokesperson stated that layoff warnings had been issued within that agency. Additionally, a DHS spokesperson indicated that staff reductions would also occur at the CISA. Moreover, a labor organization for federal workers confirmed that employees at the Education Department would be impacted by the reduction in force.

Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges

Labor representatives cautions that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on services used by millions of Americans and vowed to contest the actions in the legal system.
