The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
